A Microsoft Warning Took Over Your Screen? Don’t Call the Number

You are browsing normally when the screen suddenly turns red, starts speaking or claims that Microsoft has locked your computer. A phone number appears with a warning not to close the window. It feels official—and that sense of urgency is exactly what the scammer wants.

Real Microsoft error messages do not include a phone number telling you to call for support. If a warning demands immediate payment, gift cards, cryptocurrency or remote access, stop. You are dealing with a sales trap or a scam, not a Windows technician.

First, do not call the number

Calling confirms that a worried person is on the other end. The caller may ask you to install remote-access software, log into your bank or pay for a lifetime security plan. Do not follow those instructions, even if the person knows your name or computer model.

Try closing the browser safely

Press Alt + F4 to close the active window. If that does not work, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Task Manager and end the browser task. Restart the computer and do not restore the suspicious tabs when the browser reopens.

A pop-up alone does not prove the computer is infected. It may be a malicious advertisement or website notification. However, the risk changes if you downloaded anything, gave someone remote access or entered a password.

If someone already connected to the computer

Disconnect the computer from Wi-Fi or unplug its network cable. Do not use that machine for banking, email or shopping. From a different trusted device, change the passwords for email and financial accounts, beginning with email. Contact your bank immediately if money or account information was involved.

Write down what happened while it is fresh: the phone number, company name, remote-access program, payments and accounts you opened. That information helps your bank and your technician understand the exposure.

Do you need a virus removal?

If you only saw the message and closed the browser, a cleanup may be simple. If software was installed or a stranger controlled the mouse, the computer needs a deeper inspection.
