A used computer can be an excellent value—especially for school, a home office or a small business workstation. It can also hide a weak battery, failing drive, locked account or unsupported version of Windows.
Before handing over cash, slow down and verify what you are actually buying.
1. Confirm the exact model
Do not rely on a listing that says “Dell i7 laptop.” Find the complete model and service tag or serial number. The processor generation matters as much as the i3, i5 or i7 name.
2. Check Windows 11 compatibility
Windows 10 regular support ended in 2025. A used computer that cannot officially run Windows 11 may have a limited useful life unless you understand the security options and software requirements.
3. Verify activation and ownership
Windows should show as activated. The computer should not be locked to a former employer, school or unknown Microsoft account. A reset is not enough if device management returns during setup.
4. Test the battery and charger
On a laptop, unplug the charger and watch the battery. Look for sudden percentage drops, shutdowns or case swelling. Confirm that the included charger has the correct wattage.
5. Inspect the screen, hinges and ports
Open and close the lid slowly. Look for flickering, lines, pressure spots, loose hinges and cracks around the mounting points. Test USB, audio, video and charging ports.
6. Check storage health—not only capacity
A 1TB drive sounds impressive, but health and speed matter. An old mechanical drive may make the computer feel slow, while a failing SSD may freeze or disappear intermittently.
7. Test the keyboard, camera, Wi-Fi and audio
Small failures add up. Use every key, connect to Wi-Fi, record a short camera clip and test both speakers. On touch-screen models, test the entire panel.
8. Compare repair cost with real value
A bargain stops being a bargain when it needs a battery, drive, charger and Windows installation. Add the likely repair cost before deciding.
