Your computer can say “Windows 11” and still be running a version that needs attention this month. Microsoft lists October 13, 2026 as the end-of-updates date for Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro. That makes early October a useful time to check the PC you use for school, work, banking, or invoices.
If updates keep failing or you are unsure what your computer needs, fill out Hi-Tek Solutions’ device drop-off form. Describe the update message so our Downey team can start with the right question.
Check the version, not just the Windows name
Press the Windows key and R, type winver, and press Enter. Write down the version shown. Then open Settings, select System, and choose About to check the edition. The deadline discussed here applies to 24H2 Home and Pro; other editions have their own schedules.
A computer on a newer supported version may already be past this particular deadline. A PC on an older version needs a different review. Knowing those details prevents an unnecessary replacement recommendation.
Will the computer stop working on October 13?
No. An update deadline is not a switch that turns the computer off. The concern is continuing to use a release after its regular servicing period ends. Microsoft’s notice says affected editions will no longer receive monthly security and preview updates after the deadline.
For a family computer, the practical question is how to keep everyday activities on supported software. For a business PC, it also means planning around the applications and equipment people depend on.
Prepare before starting a feature update
- Back up important files. Check that the separate copy opens before making a major change.
- List essential applications. Include accounting software, printers, scanners, and any specialized tools you use.
- Record the problem. A photo of an error message is more useful than repeatedly trying the same installation.
- Allow for downtime. Choose a time when the computer is not needed for an urgent deadline.
Use Windows Update to check the upgrade offered to your device. If the computer is managed by your employer, coordinate with its IT team. If an upgrade is blocked or fails repeatedly, get the cause reviewed before forcing an installation or wiping the computer.
Bring the PC in with the details that matter
Hi-Tek Solutions provides Windows repair and support in Downey. Tell us the version, the error, your backup status, and which programs must keep working. Bring your laptop charger if applicable. Do not enter passwords or recovery keys into the problem-description field.
Ready to sort out the update? Start your device drop-off here, then bring the computer to 11917 Paramount Blvd, Ste H, Downey, CA 90242. Walk-ins are welcome. Completing the form starts check-in; it does not reserve a completion time.
