Your external drive starts clicking, your computer stops recognizing an SSD, or a folder of family photos disappears. The instinct is to keep reconnecting the drive until it works. When the files matter, the better first step is to pause and protect what may still be recoverable. Hi-Tek Solutions helps Bellflower residents and businesses evaluate storage problems at our Downey shop.
First, decide whether the files are replaceable
Before doing anything else, ask what is on the device and whether you have another copy. Family photos, tax records, client documents and a business database deserve a different approach than a drive used only for downloaded games. Tell the technician which files matter most and whether there is a deadline. Recovery and getting the computer running are separate goals.
A clicking hard drive needs a cautious approach
A new repeated clicking sound combined with unreadable files or a drive that no longer appears can indicate a mechanical problem. Disconnect it and avoid repeated power cycles. Do not open the drive, tap it, freeze it or run a long repair scan. The sound alone cannot identify the exact failure, but continued attempts are not a useful way to diagnose valuable data.
A missing SSD is a different problem
SSDs have no spinning platters, so they do not make the same mechanical clicking noise. A missing SSD can involve the connection, enclosure, electronics or the storage device itself. If Windows asks to initialize or format a drive that contains needed files, cancel that prompt. A drive showing up again does not automatically mean it is healthy.
What to bring for a recovery evaluation
Bring the affected device, its external enclosure or adapter, and its original power supply if it uses one. Note whether it was dropped, exposed to liquid, disconnected during a transfer, or recently reformatted. Keep any BitLocker or other encryption recovery information available; encryption may affect what can be accessed. Do not post those keys publicly or email them unsolicited.
What recovery can and cannot promise
We evaluate the device and explain the available options before approved recovery work begins. Some failures need specialist handling, and some files cannot be recovered. Our data-recovery service offers free diagnostics, with recovery starting at $129.99 depending on the case and no charge if no data is recovered. A quote is specific to the device and findings, not a guarantee based on symptoms alone.
After recovery, make the next failure less disruptive
A replacement drive is only one part of the solution. Keep another copy of important files on separate storage and consider a cloud backup appropriate to your needs. A backup should be checked by opening or restoring a sample file. For a Bellflower office, decide who checks backup failures and how work continues while the main computer is being repaired.
Most recovery work can take up to 7–9 business days; advanced cases may take longer. Recovered files need separate suitable storage. Read our data-recovery service details before drop-off.
